Maximizing your Surroundings: Better Results for Fitness Industry Clients

Recently Ian Spencer Photo had the pleasure of working with WPN, a men’s active wear company started by two guys from Australia ( Brisbane and Perth) in 2014.
Our goal was to create some realistic fitness lifestyle photography for WPN to use to promote their new collection, “AW16”.
As the photographer it is sometimes my job to seek out locations that suit the brief. We wanted plenty of room to move and shoot, lots of simple industrial backgrounds and somewhere we could use on a busy Monday morning, right through peak hour!
The team from WPN were down in Melbourne for the Australian Fitness and Health Expo and had a spare day after the expo for the photo shoot, before flying home. The pressure was on to find the right location.
After walking the streets of Melbourne, (looking dorky taking location photos with my tablet! ) I finally narrowed it down to a couple of locations.
One of the locations was a car park in the CBD, a couple of emails and phone calls to the car park company and we were set and so long as we got most of our shots done by 9 am I reckon we were going to be OK.
We needed a truckload of looks for the day so we were going to be pushed for time even more.
My main concern was not the number of “looks” or action shots but the variety of backgrounds and locations. With a little imagination and creativity we managed to utilize the different areas and corners of the car park to give a varied view and feel. We were surrounded by tall buildings and lots of builders and busy office workers going about their business, but by focusing tightly on certain areas and and shooting from up high (balancing on a stand alone fire hydrant!!) and down low the images we created tell more of a story and give a more visual balance, and are perhaps more pleasing to the eye.
It was a fast and furious photo shoot! Well kind of, fast but controlled. We all worked hard, model, stylist, client and all. We had fantastic light all day and managed to create a story that really speaks to WPN’s potential fitness apparel client base.
